German Pilot Farm Results: The Economic Benefit of Preventing Heat Stress

We completed the 12-month results report for our measurement and monitoring project conducted at 12 family farms in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein, covering a total of 2,500 dairy cows.

  1. Zero Medication, Happy Herds: Thanks to the wiCow calving-prediction module, postpartum uterine infection rates fell by 80% among cows receiving early intervention. Calving success rose above 99%.

  2. Milk Yield Protected: During the high temperatures of July and August, herds actively using wiCool experienced no milk loss compared with the control group and achieved 30% more milk per cow across lactation, together with a higher fat ratio.

How early can wiCow warn about calving?

In the published poster study, the temperature-based early warning occurred an average of approximately 16.7 hours before delivery. Individual warning times vary and are not guaranteed. Reported alarm rates were 93.33% (56/60) for the early warning and 97.06% (66/68) for the imminent-calving alarm. These are study alarm rates, rather than overall diagnostic accuracy. Can wiCool work without wiCow?

Yes. wiCool can run on barn climate monitoring alone. Adding wiCow brings in the cows' own body-temperature data, so cooling reacts to heat stress in the animals, not just the air.

How long does installation take?

Typically 6-7 days, depending on barn size, connectivity and the number of cooling zones.
